Week One In The Books!
Our first two days went very well. I am proud of the students and teachers for making the transition back to school so smooth.
Open House – 9/15
SHS is hosting an Open House on September 15th from 6 – 8 pm. This will be an in person event. Parents should arrive for 6 pm and report to their child’s advisory class. Parents will then follow their child’s schedule and have an opportunity to meet the teachers. Parents should grab a copy of their child’s schedule prior to the event.
School Picture Day
Student picture day will take place on Thursday, September 16th. We will call students down by advisory. Parents should have received an email from Lifetouch with ordering information.
Morning Drop Off
The school department and Durham bus company continue to make changes to increase efficiency with the morning drop off. Doors open at SHS at 7 am. Parents and students are encouraged to leave early to arrive at SHS. We anticipate changes to the bus times at some time early this week. Keep an eye out on the district website and social media for updates.
At this time we do not have any student parking left. When construction at Pleasant View Elementary is complete we anticipate the addition of more spots.
Course Schedule Changes
Our master schedule is very tight this school year. Course changes will be limited. Please take a moment to read the procedures for changing a course.
Students choose courses and programs based on the recommendations and best judgment of teachers, guidance counselors, the student, and parents. Parent input is gathered at course request time through the completion of the ILP parent questionnaire.
A schedule is used to arrange programs and students in some systematic order. A schedule can be most complex and a change in one area often causes changes in other areas. A student is given considerable time to choose proper courses. Schools do recognize the need for valid changes.
All requests for change will be decided on an individual basis taking into consideration all circumstances involved. Staffing and class size will be considered regarding the proposed change. Requests for a change may be initiated by a student, teacher, parent, guidance counselor, administrator, or a director of special programs.
All involved parties will be asked for their input regarding the request for change. Once the request has been processed, the counselor will approve or deny the request for change. The parent has a right to appeal to the Guidance Department Chair and then building Principal if the course request is denied. Schedule changes are allowed within the first FOUR weeks of the start of a class. They will not be recorded on the student transcript. Schedule changes allowed after the four week deadline will be recorded as withdrawals on the student transcript. Any class dropped at the semester will have the current grade posted on the transcript and it will be counted toward the semester GPA. A withdrawal will be posted for second semester and will not count toward the final GPA.
